Summer Opportunities for Alexandria Youth
Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (All Ages)
The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will offer a variety of summer week-long camps in Sports, Enrichment, Nature, Creative and Performing Arts, Technology and Aquatics. Additionally, the Power-On Out of School Time Program (OSTP) Summer Camp will be offered at multiple recreation centers and school locations for children entering first through sixth grades in fall 2022. A Power-Up OSTP Summer Camp will be offered at one location for youth entering sixth through tenth grades in fall 2022. The eight-week OSTP summer camps are open to City residents only. Summer Camps with Local Motion Project (Ages 4-Teen)
Local Motion Project is offering various half and full day dance camps for children ages 4 through teen. Younger students can engage in Creative Dance camps and learn to express their creativity and ideas through movement. Older students can sample a wide variety of dance styles to develop their dance skills and artistry. All camps take place at the Local Motion Project Movement Arts Center (2377 S. Dove Street). Before and after care is available for some full day camps. Half day camps $275. Full day camps $450. A scholarship application is available. LINK Club Summer Program (K-8)
Organized by Alexandria City Public Schools, students are engaged in half-day or full-day (depending on the site) enrichment activities, academic support and weekly field trips. Available only to school-year LINK Club participants. LINK Club is full and not accepting new enrollments for the summer program. There is no cost to participate. Peace Camp (Ages 5-14)
Offered by Little Friends for Peace, this camp is a social emotional learning program for children and youth. At Peace Camp, LFFP uses art, games and presentations to teach children mindfulness, empathy, anger management, conflict resolution and self-empowerment. Dates: June 20-June 24 and June 27-July 1from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. Camp is held in Arlington at the Unitarian Universalist Church. The fee is $330 per week; full and half scholarships are available. PK Move Inc. (Ages 7-12)
PK Summer Parkour Camps are five days of learning movement from the ground up - running, jumping, climbing, crawling, vaulting and more - every way to get from point A to point B! Taught with fun games and skill-building drills, it's basically Advanced Recess! Camp is held M-F from10 a.m. - 2 p.m. from June 13 - August 12. Sign up here and type "parkour" into the search field. Youth Impact Camp (Ages 10-14)
Offered by the Alexandria Redevelopment Housing Authority (ARHA). Free Leadership Camp for youth, both boys and girls. The camp offers leadership development, character building, STEM activities, and athletics. Program will be held at Cora Kelly Elementary School. Transportation and lunch are also provided. Breaks With Impact (Middle and High School)
This program, organized by Volunteer Alexandria, is a chance for students - grades 6 through 12 - to learn about the issues facing their community, engage with nonprofits, city agencies and people from all walks of life as they earn service hours and explore career paths, while on summer break. 4-H Summer Camp (Ages 9-13 Sleep Away)
This is a 5-day, 4-night camp along side the beautiful Appalachian Trail in Front Royal, VA-- scenic, quiet, and away from the hustle and bustle of the DC Metro. Kids will learn self-motivation, leadership, teamwork and a host of other important life-long skills while trying new activities like low-ropes, canoeing and archery. Any child aged 9-13 is welcome to camp and make unforgettable memories while in a safe and supervised environment. The fee is $375 and covers all food, lodging, classes, supplies and t-shirt. Alexandria Summer Youth Institute (Ages 12-18)
Offered by Tenants and Workers United, the goal of the program is to engage youth in different workshops/opportunities that include arts, music, dance, sports, career development and educational activities to learn more about their communities and city. Alexandria Youth Leadership Conference (Rising 9-12 Graders)
Sponsored by the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy, the FREE 8th annual Alexandria Youth Leadership Conference is a free opportunity for Alexandria youth grades 9-12 to develop their leadership skills though engaging virtual workshops and learn more about opportunities to use their skills by participating in an in-person networking fair with community leaders. Held August 9-11 with workshops on August 9 and 10 taking place virtually on Zoom and activities on August 11 taking place in person at Beatley Central Library. Participants must be able to access Zoom on a computer or personal device. Masks will be required for in-person, indoor activities. Liberty's Promise Summer Internship for Immigrants (Ages 15-21)
Liberty's Promise is providing summer internships for immigrant youth in the City of Alexandria. Interested students should be able to commit to working 20 hours per week at their host organization. Host sites vary and can range from local nonprofits and government offices, to community organizations or recreation centers. The internship takes place over the summer for a total of eight weeks. Participants receive an allowance of $250 per two weeks to cover costs associated with the internship. Intern tasks will vary at each host site, however participants should expect to gain insight into workplace culture in the U.S. and experience they can add to their resumes. All participants are required to participate in a one-time job skills workshop prior to being placed with a host site and must be legally authorized to work in the US, between the ages of 15 and 21, from a low-income household (as defined by HUD guidelines), and be immigrants or born here to immigrant parents.
