Van Dorn Metro Station Improvement Project
This project made improvements to the kiss-and-ride and shuttle area at the Van Dorn Metro Station. The kiss-and-ride area was redesigned to better accommodate the large number of private shuttle buses serving the station, as well as the larger shuttles which currently serve the facility from Eisenhower Avenue. In addition, pedestrian safety and access improvements were made.
During the summer of 2019, as part of the Metro Platform Improvement Project, the Van Dorn Metro station platform was reconstructed due to deterioration that had occurred among all outdoor station within the system. Improvements, completed in early 2020, included new slip resistant tiles, new shelters and improved Passenger Information Displays. In addition, the Van Dorn Metro Kiss & Ride lot was reconstructed to improve vehicular and pedestrian circulation and safety, and accommodate future shuttle demand. This included new sidewalks, ramps and transit shelters.
Project Background
In 2014, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro), in coordination with the City of Alexandria and Fairfax County, initiated the Van Dorn Kiss & Ride and Shuttle Bus Access Improvement Study to identify and develop design improvements to accommodate the current and future shuttle demand in the Kiss & Ride lot and buses using the Bus Loop at the Van Dorn Metrorail (“the Station”).
Van Dorn St Metrorail Station Kiss & Ride Shuttle Bus Access Improvement Study, April 2014
The Van Dorn Metro Station currently has the second highest shuttle activity in the Metrorail system, and this shuttle activity is forecasted to increase by 63 percent by 2040. The City of Alexandria is planning more frequent transit service near the Van Dorn Metro station, as recommended in the Alexandria Transit Vision Plan and is also implementing the West End Transitway project that will terminate at the station. As part of the study, design alternatives were developed to accommodate the current and future needs at the Kiss & Ride facility. This report describes and provides cost estimates for the design options that increase capacity and improve circulation for both the Kiss & Ride lot and Bus Loop.
