A DCHS CONNECT FEATURE
November 11, 2021--Alexandria’s Department of Community and Human Services released its annual Community Impact Report for fiscal year 2021, which reflects progress and activities from July 2020 through June 2021.
The report outlines the Department’s accomplishments around a wide range of services and programs aimed at improving the lives of Alexandria’s residents.
The 37-page report summarizes the major achievements of the three direct service bodies and provides data and information about DCHS operations, budget and leadership.
In a section titled “Message from The Director,” Kate Garvey wrote about the impact of the recent year.
“In our last report, I said that the year had been like no other in recent history. The pandemic, the devastating racial violence and the economic hardships, all felt unprecedented. Our ability to respond and maintain our focus on these daunting challenges also felt peerless,” Garvey wrote.
“And yet, here we are again reflecting on all that we have worked through and the incredible fortitude of our community. The difference a year makes is the cumulative impact this strain has had on families and on our staff and our growing ability to find solutions.”
DCHS envisions a community in which residents enjoy a sense of well-being, safety and self-sufficiency and is on a mission to improve and maintain the quality of life for all city residents.
During the year, the Department kept the community engaged and informed of its activities and provided regular updates of resources to those in need through different channels and platforms, such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, the official website, a Spanish text line, eNews and news releases and flyers.
The community impact report is another informative medium employed by DCHS to communicate comprehensive information about its work and services every year. A few highlights from this year’s report include:
- Alexandria’s Center for Economic Support (CES) helped 3,445 households by providing them with financial assistance, case management and homelessness prevention services. The Center and its partners worked to reduce the impact of the eviction crisis and developed long-term strategies to prevent and end homelessness.
- The Center for Children and Families, through the Fund for Alexandria’s Child and supported by an advisory council of 10 volunteers, helped foster children and those at risk for out-of-home placement to participate in activities that helped to normalize their lives such as athletic teams and dance classes.
- A total of 76,856 meals were paid for and delivered to Alexandrian’s seniors and adults with disabilities through Alexandria’s Center for Adult Services.
- The Department’s Center for Operations managed a $99.3 million multi-sourced budget that funded DCHS and partner support services to the residents.
