Registration Open for Virtual Youth Mental Health First Aid Training
A DCHS CONNECT NEWS HIGHLIGHT
August 13, 2021--According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in six youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year in the United States. DCHS is offering a virtual training course designed to help laypersons and paraprofessionals learn skills to support adolescents who are experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or crisis.
Youth Mental Health First Aid will be held virtually on September 28 and 29, 6-9 p.m., and is open to parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers and other caring residents.
The course teaches risk factors, warning signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use disorders, the effects of the illnesses, an overview of treatments and a five-step action plan for helping someone with symptoms.
Space is limited. Residents interested in the training need to register online.
DCHS also offers a wide range of mental health resources for all ages. In addition, the Virginia COPES non-crisis support line provides support services and community referrals for individuals struggling with trauma, grief or distress by phone or text at 877.349.6428, weekdays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The City also has several 24-hour crisis hotlines. If you or a loved one are in danger of self-harm, please dial 911 or go immediately to your nearest emergency room.
