Alexandria Police Department Releases Critical Incident Community Briefing of Officer-Involved Shooting on Maris Avenue
Critical incidents including officer use of force and officer-involved shootings are some of the most emotional and difficult situations facing law enforcement officers and the communities we serve. The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is committed to providing 21st-century policing – including transparency, use of available technology, and following best practices.
Consistent with the APD’s policy of releasing body-worn camera footage related to critical incidents, the APD will provide a Critical Incident Community Briefing (CICB) to our community. These briefings may include maps, excerpts of 9-1-1 calls, body-worn camera video, and evidence photos so that the community will have a better understanding of the law enforcement response and the outcome of the incident including explanations of the investigative process. These briefings will be released under the Department Directive 2.8 and at the discretion of the Chief of Police following the incident.
This CICB video is related to the officer-involved shooting that occurred on August 12, 2024. Viewer discretion is advised.
After a thorough review of the criminal investigation, the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney has ruled the officer's actions were justified and the officer's use of force was objectively reasonable under the circumstances. An internal investigation is ongoing and will proceed to the Office of Professional Responsibility and the Office of the Alexandria Independent Policing Auditor.
