Officers Honored by Alexandria Optimist ClubAlexandria Optimist Club 2

On June 23, at approximately 12:13 a.m., Police received a call for a car crash.  The caller reported the car was on fire with the occupant trapped inside.

Officer Humberto “Alex” Trapero and Sergeant Christopher Flood were first on the scene.  They found a car in a yard, smashed against a tree and on fire.  The car’s engine was fully engulfed in flames.  The fire was creeping outside and crawling up the driver’s side of the car.  The driver was visible through the smoke, but was not moving.

Heedless of their own safety, Officer Trapero and Sergeant Flood approached the heat and growing flames to rescue the driver.  They discovered the car doors were locked.  The driver was not responsive.  Officer Trapero retrieved a pry bar from his cruiser and smashed through the passenger side window.  Together, Officer Trapero and Sergeant Flood dragged the unconscious driver out the passenger door.  As they removed the driver, a small explosion threw debris which hit Officer Trapero on the head and back.  This did not stop him or Sergeant Flood from  moving the driver to safety behind some cars parked nearby.

After the driver had been transported to Inova Alexandria Hospital, Sergeant Flood noticed he had sustained minor burns to his face.  Officer Trapero found lacerations on one of his arms.  Neither chose to report these injuries, considering them to be insignificant.  Their injuries are proof of the danger they overcame.  They deliberately placed themselves at great personal risk to rescue a stranger in need.

For their brave and selfless acts, Sergeant Flood and Officer Trapero were honored by the Alexandria Optimist Club on July 28 in a ceremony held at Belle Haven Country Club.
