Due to inclement weather, City facilities and offices are closed Monday, January 6, 2025. Essential personnel and facilities necessary for emergency and weather response will remain in operating status.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning that went into effect Sunday at 10 p.m. through Tuesday at 1 a.m. Impacted areas include northern Virginia, central Maryland, and portions of D.C.  During this time, residents should expect heavy mixed precipitation (snow/sleet), with totals between 5 and 9 inches.

Temperatures will remain cold for the duration of the storm, with daytime highs at or below freezing with nighttime temps in the teens. Cold temps and wind chills will make outdoor travel and other activities challenging.

Update as of 9:15 a.m. Sunday, January 5:

  • All collection services for trash, yard waste, compost, and recycling will slide one day beginning Monday, January 6.
  • The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) centers will be closed, and any bulk or metal services scheduled by appointment will be rescheduled.
  • Paratransit Service: The City’s DOT paratransit program has canceled paratransit trips outside of Alexandria city limits from noon Sunday to 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
  • The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter (2355-A Mill Rd.) will remain open from 7 p.m. this evening through Thursday, Jan. 9.

The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511.
