Inmate Artwork, Crafts Exhibited at Art on the Avenue

Artwork by inmates at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center was on exhibit at Art on the Avenue on Saturday, October 5, and those attending the annual arts and music festival in Del Ray voted for their favorite. Sheriff’s Office staff displayed eleven drawings in ink, pencil and/or color pencil and festival goers voted for their favorite by dropping a ballot in a box. Staff also displayed crocheted baby blankets crafted by female inmates in LEAD (Ladies’ Education And Development), an education and life skills program specifically for women. The blankets, along with caps and booties, are donated to Inova Alexandria Hospital for mothers and newborns to take home.

Two days before Art on the Avenue, inmate artists shared their work with fellow inmates who voted for their favorites. Pat Miller, former chair of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts and longtime chief organizer of Art on the Avenue, attended the inmate art show and addressed the audience, applauding the creativity of the inmates who took part in the exhibition. First, second and third place prizes in the jail competition were awarded to Jose Victor Campbell, DeAngelo Campbell and Anthony Talbert, respectively. More than 500 people voted at Art on the Avenue with Jose Victor Campbell, Anthony Talbert and Milliage Evans finishing first, second and third, respectively. All four inmates will receive credit to their accounts covering personal expenses like snacks, postage and hygiene items.

To see all the artwork, visit the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page where all eleven entries are included in a photo album. For more information about this program or to volunteer to work with inmates, please contact Cherye Echane at 703.746.5079.
