Our Mission

It is the mission of the Alexandria Sheriff's Office to protect the life and property of our citizens and those placed in our custody and to provide quality services to the people of the City of Alexandria. We will serve our community with honor, integrity, and compassion, and will fulfill, with dedication to excellence, all legal mandates prescribed by our federal, State, and local governments.

Office Overview

The Alexandria Sheriff's Office is responsible for the operation of the Detention Center, courthouse and courtroom security, service of all court legal documents, execution of court orders, transportation of prisoners, execution of arrest warrants, and general public safety and law enforcement.

Child Safety Seat Program Reaches Milestone with 500th Installation
After launching its child safety seat program just over a year ago, the Sheriff’s Office reached a milestone in July when a deputy installed the 500th seat. The program began in summer 2013 after three deputies completed a week of training to become certified safety seat technicians and joined a fourth who was already certified. The team began offering inspection and installation services in July 2013 and recently installed its 500th seat. City residents may schedule an appointment for this free service by calling 703.746.4114 during regular business hours.
Inmates Recognized for Educational Achievements
Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and his staff recently honored six inmates at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center for their educational accomplishments. Three inmates who passed their GED examinations and three who earned food safety certifications were recognized during a graduation ceremony at the jail on Thursday, August 28.
Detention Center Staff Trained in National Institute of Corrections Curriculum
Three Sheriff’s Office employees and one volunteer successfully completed facilitator training in the Thinking for a Change (T4C) curriculum for offenders. The four-day training at the Alexandria Probation & Parole Office concluded on Thursday, June 26, with Lisa Stapleton, Chief of Alexandria Probation & Parole, and Chief Deputy Wendy Webb congratulating all the participants, including Reentry Counselor Denise Costley, Classification Counselor Andrea Hancock, Deputy Todd Stubblefield and Michael Price, a Sheriff’s Office volunteer.
Sheriff's Office Offering Child Safety Seat Inspections

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office provides child safety seat inspections for City residents. This free service is available by appointment only. To request this service, please call 703.746.4114 during regular business hours and a deputy will follow up to schedule an appointment.

Detention Center Operations and Facility Services Bureau

The Detention Center Operations and Support Services Bureau is the largest of the Sheriff’s Office's three organizational bureaus. Under the command of Chief Deputy Doug Schuler, the Bureau is responsible for managing the Alexandria Detention Center's security as well as the facility itself. The Security Division and Support Services Division comprise the Bureau. The Security Division supervises Security Teams, Special Management Sergeant, and Visitors Center operations, among other responsibilities. The Support Services Division maintains the physical plant, manages fire safety and sanitation, supervises the preparation and delivery of all staff and inmate meals, and maintains inmate records.

Judicial and Special Operations Bureau

The Judicial and Special Operations Bureau, under the command of Undersheriff Timothy Gleeson, is the arm of the Sheriff’s Office most visible to the general public, with of its work performed in the streets and neighborhoods of Alexandria, or under the watchful eye of citizens who frequent the Alexandria Courthouse. The Bureau encompasses the Judicial Operations and Special Operations Sections, which are responsible for functions that serve the courts and perform security, warrant service and other special operations functions in the communities of Alexandria.

Administrative and Inmate Services Bureau

Under the command of Chief Deputy Wendy Webb, the Administrative and Inmate Services Bureau is responsible for administrative functions like developing and managing the agency’s annual budget, developing policy and technology, hiring and training all Sheriff's Office employees, and for managing the Office's financial affairs. It also provides direct services to inmates through intake and classification, a volunteer program, local probation and pre-trial services, alternative programs, and education, religious and life skills programs.
