T.C. Williams Senior Experience 2013

Just before they graduate from high school, eligible seniors at T.C. Williams can participate in Senior Experience, a three-week program that allows students to spend time in the workplace. Seven Titans, including several who had been studying criminal justice in Kris Gulden’s class, spent their Senior Experience with the Alexandria Police Department and Alexandria Sheriff’s Office, seeing how what they learned in class is put to use in the real world.

From May 20 through June 7, Courtney Booterbaugh, Abi Osei, Katja Shimkin, Jacqueline Tapia, Rodney Thomas, Sean Thomas and Meelad Yousufzai spent their school day working with criminal justice professionals at Alexandria Police Headquarters, the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center, the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy and the Alexandria Courthouse. The students met Police Chief Earl Cook and Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and saw demonstrations and presentations by crime scene investigators, crime analysts, K9 teams, tactical and emergency response teams, and other specialized units. They went on ride-alongs with patrol officers and sheriff’s deputies and observed the 911 call center operated by the Department of Emergency Communications.

The students also participated in training at the Corporal Charles W. Hill Firearms Training Facility in Alexandria and the Emergency Vehicle Operations Center in Nokesville. Under the supervision of certified instructors, students were able to experience firearms safety training and behind the wheel driving instruction on a closed track.

On their final day, Ms. Gulden and Maria Muhtadi-Roach, T.C.’s Assistant Director of School Counseling, joined the students for their Senior Experience graduation ceremony at the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Chief Cleveland Spruill and Undersheriff Tim Gleeson congratulated the students and presented each with a certificate of achievement from both agencies.
