Tips for a Super Safe Summer

Summer is a great time to have fun outdoors. Whatever your plans are, follow the simple tips below so that you and your family can have a super safe summer.

Beware of the bite - Mosquito and tick bites can transfer serious diseases like West Nile and Lyme.

Bite prevention:

  • Cover up with long, loose and light colored clothing
  •  Apply an insect repellent whenever you are outside
    • For ticks: Use a repellent containing 20% DEET
    • For mosquito:  Use a repellent containing DEET, Picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus

Beat the heat - Extreme heat can cause fatal heat-related illness such as heat stroke.

Heat-related illness prevention:

  • Drink water and avoid drinks with alcohol or high amounts of sugar.
  • On extremely hot days, stay in cool air conditioned areas. If you have to be outdoors, limit most of your activity to the morning or evening hours when it is cooler.

Block the sun not the fun - The sun helps the body in producing vitamin D; however, unprotected exposure to the sun’s rays can increase your risk of skin cancer.

Sunburn prevention:

  • Use a sunscreen or sun block with at least a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15
  • During midday (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) when the sun can be intense:
    • Stay indoors
    • Cover up with light clothing
    • Wear a brimmed hat
    • Protect your eyes with a pair of sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection
