Waterfront Small Area Plan Implementation
On February 25, 2012 City Council adopted the Waterfront Small Area Plan. The Plan provides a framework for revitalizing Alexandria’s waterfront through several means, including:  incorporating Alexandria’s history as a foundation for planning and design, expanding and enhancing public open spaces, improving public access and connectivity, promoting the waterfront as an arts and cultural destination, ensuring compatible development. Find more information about efforts to meet the Plan's goals and recommendations, and information regarding the Waterfront Commission established by City Council in April 2012.
Current Plans, Projects and Studies

Alexandria continues to be a desirable location to live, work and play. The City’s collaborative development review process strives to balance quality development and the needs of the growing community. Current large-area development projects include Potomac Yard and the James Bland RedevelopmentLandmark Mall redevelopment and development projects in the Beauregard Small Area Plan. The Active Development Project list gives information about other projects in the City. Information on policies affecting development, such as the Rezoning Criteria and the Green Building Policy, Design Guidelines, and other resources can be found on the Development page.
Zoning & Permits

Get information about the City’s zoning regulations including residential infill regulations that apply to new houses, residential additions, front porches and garages. Find out about permits for King Street Outdoor Dining and A-frame signs, and resources for small businesses and home occupations.

Historic Preservation
There are several historic districts in the City including the Parker Gray and Old and Historic Districts. Find out more about the historic districts, the types of requests that are reviewed by staff and the Boards of Architectural Review and what makes Alexandria’s Historic Districts truly unique.  Recent projects under review in the Parker Gray and Old and Historic Districts include the Jefferson-Houston Elementary School Redevelopment and the Carr Hospitality proposal at 220 S. Union Street.
