Board & Commission Vacancies

The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the following vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions and committees. Council will act on these vacancies at the January 13, 2015, City Council meeting. All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record Form electronically via the City’s website at www.alexandriava.gov/Boards no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, December 29, 2014. Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council. Applicants may only submit an application to one commission at a time.

Affordable Housing Advisory Committee – one vacancy for a representative of an employer in the City who employs at least 100 employees, due to a resignation. The Committee meets at 7:00 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month. Approximately four to five hours per month are required of Committee members.

Alexandria Gang Task Force – five vacancies: two members from and representing the youth of the City of Alexandria, one due to an administrative action and one due to an expired term; one City Manager or his designee representative, due to a resignation; one member from a community organization with specific outreach to the Latino community, due to an expired term; and one vacancy for a member from and representing the faith based community, due to an administrative action. The Task Force meets quarterly during the weekday evening. Approximately two hours per meeting are required of Task Force members.

Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority – two vacancies:  one for a citizen member, due to an expiring term; and representative from the Alexandria Resident Council, who must be a resident of public or publicly assisted housing, due to an expiring term.  

Alexandria Renew Enterprises – one vacancy for a citizen member, due to an expiring term. The Authority meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Authority members.  

Alexandria Transportation Commission – two vacancies for citizens members, one who resides east of Quaker Lane and one who resides west of Quaker Lane, (new positions) due to an ordinance change.  The Commission meets at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.  Approximately two hours per month are required of commission members.  

Beautification Commission – three vacancies for citizen members, one due to an expiring term and two due to resignations. The Commission meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately eight hours per month are required of Commission members.  

Board of Zoning Appeals – one vacancy for a citizen member, due to an expiring term. The Board meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately five hours per month are required of Board members. 

Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee – one vacancy for a City resident member designated by the Alexandria School Board, due to an expiring term.  The Committee meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately six hours per month are required of Committee members.  

Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission – three vacancies:  one ACPS employee, due to an expiring term; one City of Alexandria employee, due to an expiring term; and one young adult (ages 18-21) due to an administrative action. The Commission meets on the second Wednesday of each month.  Approximately eight hours per month are required of commission members.  

Citizen Corps Council – one vacancy for a representative of the Alexandria business community, due to a resignation. The Council meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. Approximately four hours per month are required of Council members. 

Commission on Aging – three vacancies: two for citizen members who are 60 years of age or older, due to expiring terms; and one for a citizen member, due to an expiring term. The Commission meets on the second Thursday of the month at 4:00 p.m.  Approximately six hours per month are required of Commission members. Commissioners are required to become involved in at least one committee.  

Commission on Employment – three vacancies: two business representative from among recognized area businesses including minority-owned and small businesses, one due to an expiring term and one due to a resignation; and one for a representative from such organizations as educational agencies, organized labor, rehabilitation agencies, community-based organizations, economic development agencies and the public employment services, due to a resignation. The Commission meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 8:00 a.m.  Approximately five hours per month are required of Commission members. 

Commission on HIV/AIDS – two vacancies: one member who is a practicing physician, due to a resignation; one representative of Inova Alexandria Hospital Department of Pastoral Services due to a resignation. The Commission meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately three hours per month are required of Commission members. 

Commission on Information Technology – four vacancies: one citizen member, due to an expiring term; one T.C. Williams High School student, recommended by the faculty; one representative of an institution of higher education located in Northern Virginia, due to an expired term; and one representative from the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee, due to a resignation. The Commission meets on the second Monday of every month. Approximately two hours per meeting are required of Commission members.

Community Criminal Justice Board – one vacancy for a representative of the business community recommended by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to an expired term. The Board meets quarterly on the first Thursday of the month at 4:00 p.m.  Approximately two hours per month are required of Board members.  

Community Policy and Management Team – three vacancies: two parent representatives who are not employees of any public or private program which receives funds from the Comprehensive Services Act, due to resignations; and one for the director of the Juvenile Court Services Unit, due to a resignation. The Team meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 3:00 p.m.  Approximately two hours per month are required of Team members.  

Community Services Board – two vacancies: one for a consumer who is currently receiving services, due to an expired term; and one for a licensed physician representative, due to a resignation. The Board meets on the first Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. Approximately eight hours per month are required of Board members.  

Economic Opportunities Commission – three vacancies for representatives of the poor, certified by the Commission, due to resignations.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Commission members. 

Emergency Medical Services Council – six vacancies: one representative of the hospital administration at Inova Alexandria Hospital, due to a resignation; one representative of the hospital administration at Alexandria Inova Hospital, due to a resignation; one operational medical director, due to an expiring term; one emergency room physician from Alexandria Hospital, due to an administrative action; one representative of the Alexandria Medical Society who has privileges at Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term; and one for a representative of the Emergency Nurses Association from Alexandria Hospital due to an expired term. The Council meets quarterly at the call of the chair.

Environmental Policy Commission – two vacancies:  one for a citizen member, due to an expiring term; and one for a member from the field of environmental sciences, (e.g., environmental/sanitary engineering, ecology, geology, botany, hydrology, chemistry) or who have Alexandria waterfront expertise, due to an expiring term. The Commission meets for a work session on the first Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m. and a regular meeting on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately 15 hours per month are required of commission members.

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – eleven vacancies: one for a citizen member, due to a term limit; one member nominated by the First Virginia Regiment of the Continental Line, due to a resignation; one member nominated by the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum Society, due to an expiring term; two business community representatives nominated by the Chamber of Commerce, one due to an expired term and one due to an expiring term; one member nominated by the Veterans of Foreign Wars due to a resignation; one member nominated by the Alexandria Federation of Civic Associations due to a resignation.  The Committee meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately three to five hours per month are required of Committee members.

Health Systems Agency of Northern Virginia – one vacancy for either a consumer member (broadly representative of the health service area, including individuals representing the principal social, economic and racial populations of the area or for a provider member (must be a representative of a wide range of health care professionals.) Consumer or provider appointees from racial minorities and representatives of handicapped populations are urged to apply, as well as representatives of the insurance industry and the business community. The board meets monthly, usually on the second Monday of each month, at 7:30 p.m.  Members may also meet an additional evening per month for committee work, and additional hours are necessary for reading background materials that are distributed to members. Most board and committee meetings are held in Fairfax County near Falls Church.  

Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – six vacancies: one representative of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, due to an expiring term; one member who serves as a volunteer at a historic property or attraction which is open to the public on a regularly scheduled basis, due to an expiring term; one representative of the Alexandria Association, due to an expiring term; one for a representative from the Public Records Advisory Commission, due to a resignation; one business representative, designated by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to an administrative action; and one Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association representative, due to an administrative action. The Commission meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 p.m.  The Commission does not meet in the summer.  Approximately two hours per month are required of Commission members.

Human Rights Commission – one vacancy for a Landlord-Tenant Relations Board representative, due to a resignation. The Commission meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately five hours per month are required of Commission members.

Industrial Development Authority – one vacancy for a citizen member, due to a resignation. The Authority meets at the call of the Chairperson.

Law Library Board – one vacancy for a citizen member, due to an expiring term. The Board meets monthly on the third Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.  Approximately 1-1/2 hours per meeting are required of Board members.   

Local Emergency Planning Committee – two vacancies: one for a representative of broadcast and print media, due to an expired term; and one for an owner and operator of a facility subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to a vacancy created by a term limit. The Committee meets quarterly at the call of the chair.  Approximately two hours per meeting are required of Committee members. 

Planning Commission – three vacancies for citizen members, two due to expiring terms and one due to an administrative action (term limit).  The Commission meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.  Approximately ten hours per month are required of Commission members.  

Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee – four vacancies: one for a qualified professional skilled in architecture, due to an expired term; two for Potomac East area representatives, one due to an expiring term and one due to an expired term; and one for a Potomac West area representative, due to a resignation. The Committee meets at the call of the chair.  

Public Health Advisory Commission – three vacancies: one for a dentist practicing in the City, nominated by the Medical Society of Northern Virginia; one for a representative from the Alexandria Neighborhood Health Services, Inc. Board of Directors, nominated by such board, due to an expired term; and one vacancy for a physician practicing in the City nominated by the Alexandria Medical Society due to a resignation. The Commission meets on the third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m.  Approximately four hours per month are required of Commission members.

Public Records Advisory Commission – one vacancy for a citizen member, due to an expired term. The Commission meets on the third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.  Approximately two hours per month are required of Commission members.  

Social Services Advisory Board – three vacancies for parent representatives, two due to expiring terms and one due to a resignation. The Board meets on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. Approximately six hours per month are required of Commission members.  

Urban Design Advisory Committee – one vacancy for a representative of the Old Town North business community, due to an expired term. 

USS Alexandria Liaison Committee – one vacancy for a citizen member, due to an expiring term.  

Waterfront Commission – two vacancies: one representative from the Historic Alexandria Foundation, due to an administration action; and one for a citizen representative from Park Planning District III, due to an expired term. The Committee meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m.  Approximately five hours per month are required of Committee members.

Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time. 

Please note that the term “expiring term” means the position vacancy is due to a term of an incumbent that is about to expire, and the incumbent may or may not reapply for the position.

All applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency waiver is granted, and City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies on boards, committee or commissions that relate to the responsibilities of the department in which they are employed.
