Youth Sports


General Information

Registration forms for sports programs and leagues may be obtained through Alexandria Schools, Libraries, Recreation Centers, and the Youth Sports Office at 1108 Jefferson St. Fees and programs are subject to change. Teams are formed through Recreation Center Districts, not school boundaries. After the league registration deadline, players will be assessed a late fee and will be placed on teams based on space availability. Registration for all Youth Sports leagues and activiies must be accompanied by a birth certificate unless one is already on file in the Sports Office.

Registration forms can be downloaded from this page, completed and mailed in with required fees and information to the Youth Sports Division at 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria Virginia 22314-3999. For additional information call 703.746.5402.

Only City of Alexandria residents are eligible to participate in the youth sports programs listed below.

Volunteers Needed

The Youth Sports Office is currently seeking volunteers to coach youth baseball, softball, swimming, track and field, tackle football, flag football, field hockey, rugby, basketball, cheerleading and volleyball. Criminal background checks are required by all volunteer coaches. Coaches are provided training opportunities. Volunteer coaches are required to attend the National Youth Sports Coaches Alliance (NYSCA) certification clinic.

NYSCA LogoNational Youth Sports Coaches Alliance (NYSCA) 

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities sponsors the National Youth Sports Alliance coaches certification program. NYSCA provides volunteer youth coaches with valuable information on the psychology of coaching children, first aid, safety, how to organize fun and interesting practices, maximizing athletic performance, tips on teaching sports techniques, how to help children to avoid drugs as well as many other important areas.

To become an NYSCA member, coaches must pass a written test on the material presented during the clinic and sign the Coaches’ Code of Ethics pledge, which stresses the importance of placing the emotional and physical well-being of players ahead of personal desire to win. The City of Alexandria along with a number of other local jurisdictions is a proud member of the MARPSA organization. The purpose of the MARPSA is to develop and communicate a consistent message that organizations and their players, coaches and spectators will be held accountable to a code of conduct that promotes sportsmanship and keeps recreational competitive and non-competitive sporting activities in proper prospective.

Players, coaches and parents are required to complete a Code of Conduct Form before participating in the any youth sports program in Alexandria.

 

Pursuing Victory With Honor Sportsmanship CampaignVictory with Honor Logo
The City of Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities and the Alexandria Chapter of 4-H has implemented a Character Counts/Pursuing Victory With Honor Program. The purpose of the program is for students-athletes to increase their knowledge and skills in character education, including trust, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship, both on and off the playing field.

The advisory board is made of representatives from each of the youth sports organizations and high schools within the City of Alexandria who meet on a regular basis to discuss common issues surrounding youth sports and make recommendations to improve the youth sports programs, facilities and fields within the City of Alexandria. Miracle Baseball League Of Alexandria (Ages 6 - Young Adults)  -  2013 Spring Season

Mission of Program: The Miracle Baseball League of Alexandria provides opportunities for children and young adults with mental and/or physical challenges to play baseball regardless of their ability.  The participants will have the opportunity to hit, run the bases and score a run. Our mission is to provide children between the ages of 6 -17 and young adults 18 years & up access to sports programs for kids of all abilities and levels. Major League 1 - for participants with moderate to severe disabilities. Major League 2 - for participants wanting a “less intense, less competitive and more relaxed" atmosphere where they can be successful and enjoy the game just for its own sake without the pressure of the competitive and more intense league play in Little League. Each participant will have a “Angels in the Outfield” volunteer buddy to assist them in hitting and running the bases.  Players will receive a major league baseball replica jersey and a hat. Registration Information:  The Miracle League of Alexandria is open for any child or young adult who resides in the City of Alexandria.  Children who participate in any Recreation Department Therapeutic Recreation program, Alexandria City Public School System program or any agency/organization in the City are eligible to participate. Games will be played on Saturday afternoons at the Lee Center Field beginning in mid-September through October. Age is determined by the age of the participant as of April 30, 2013.

Community Open Play

July is National Park and Recreation Month in Alexandria and throughout the United States. The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is celebrating “Rock Your Park” by offering free Community Open Play Days and Nights throughout the summer at Ben Brenman Soccer & Softball Field, Four Mile Soccer Field and weekends only at Witter Recreation Park.

Beginning Saturday, June 29 through August 18 we will be providing the opportunities for families, friends and neighbors of all ages to come visit our fields to exercise, play soccer, lacrosse, touch football, rugby, frisbee and much more.

The dates and times for each location are below:

Ben Brenman Field (4800 Ben Brenman Drive) - Tuesday & Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

Four Mile Soccer Field (3700 Commonwealth Avenue) - Tuesday & Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

 Witter Recreational Fields (2700 Witter Drive) - Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Below are some guidelines to consider as you go to “Rock Your Park”.

• For City residents only.
• Show courtesy to all other field users.
• No permits or registration will be required and use will be on a first come, first served basis.
• No uniformed teams or structured games will be allowed.
• Must provide your own equipment/balls.
• Tennis shoes or turf athletic shoes must be worn on the field.
• When more than two pick up teams are playing, a time limit will be enforced.
• No pets, smoking, alcohol, music will be allowed at the fields.
• All trash must be deposed of in the trash containers.
• Youth must be accompanied by a parent or an adult chaperone.
• Please follow all field and park regulations.
• HAVE FUN!!!!

Alexandria Titans Tackle Football (Ages 7-16)

The Alexandria Titans are a member of the Fairfax County Youth Football League (FCYFL). For additional information about the Fairfax County Youth Football League (FCYFL), click here. The FCYFL is a full contact tackle football league. Teams are formed based on ability as well as by and age/weight chart. Teams are formed in the following divisions: Anklebiter (AB), 80, 90, 100, 115, 130 and 150 pounds. At the official weigh in, Anklebiters must weigh at least 40 pounds and those in the 80 LB weight group and above must weigh at least 56 pounds. Players age 7 do not have a maximum weight. View the age and weight chart below. For more information on the age & weight chart, contact the Sports Office at 703.746.5402. City of Alexandria residents only. Each participant is required to have their own current Department of Motor Vehicle Identification Card in order to play in the league and receive equipment. For more information on how to obtain a D.M.V. ID visit their website at virginia.dmv.org. Participant's age is determined by their age as of October 1, 2013

Preseason camp will be held July 29 - August 1 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at George Washington Middle School. Participants should wear t-shirts, shorts and cleats and bring water. Alexandria Titans coaches will facilitate the camp. Participants will learn the proper techniques of passing, catching, blocking, and other fundamentals of football. Participants must be registered for the 2013 season to attend the camp. Practice will begin Monday, August 5 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at the Braddock Road Field, located next to George Washington Middle School at 1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue. Practice will be Monday - Friday until Alexandria City Public Schools begin. Practices shall not exceed one 2 hour period per day. Beginning with the first week of school, the number of team practices or team meetings shall not exceed 4 per week including games for all weight groups.

                


Lil' Titans Flag Football (Ages 5 & 6)

The flag football league is a developmental program that will introduce participants to the sport. The program will begin with a clinic on Tuesday, September 10 at the field behind George Washington Middle School located at 1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue. The clinic will take place from 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm on September 10 and September 12. Team practices will begin the week of September 16. Once teams are formed, the head coach of each team will set the specific days and times for practice for their team. Teams will be formed by recreation districts. League games will begin Saturday, September 28. League games will be played at Braddock Road Field or George Washington Middle School. Both fields are located at 1005 Mt. Vernon Avenue. Games will be played on Saturday and each team will play five league games. Participant's age is determined by their age as of October 1, 2013. The Sports Office will provide each player with a team jersey. The coaches will receive footballs, flags, and other coaching material. Each participant is required to wear athletic gear to games and practices. Athletic shoes must be worn.

Summer Instructional Baseball League (Ages 6 - 8)

The instructional coach pitch league is designed to incorporate basic baseball skills of catching, throwing, hitting, running and learning the rules of the game in a physically safe and non-threatening environment. League games will be played Monday and Wednesday beginning July 8. Each participant will receive a team jersey and hat. City of Alexandria residents only. League age is determined by their age as of April 30, 2013. For additional information, please call 703.746.5402.

Girls Softball Open Play Nights (Ages 6 - 16)

Players can improve their softball fundamentals includes pitching, catching, bunting, base running, sliding, throwing, hitting and situation play. The nights are open to any girls who are interested in learning and improving their skill level. Mac Slover and other softball coaches will conduct the sessions.

Any player interested in pitching shoiuld arrive 30 minutes before their session begins. (Arrive by 6 p.m. for 6 – 11 years and 7:15 p.m. for the 12 & up). Pitchers will have to bring their own catchers (parents/players with them) to catch them. Youth catchers however, must have wear a mask to catch. Players should bring their own gloves, bats (if you have one), cleats, plenty of water and ready to hustle and learn.

  • Open play nights will take place on June 26, July 3, July 10, July 17 and July 24. 
  • Ages 6 - 11 from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m.
  • Ages 12 and older from 7:45 to 9 p.m.
     

            

Alexandria Titans Track & Field Club (Ages 7 - 14)

The Titans Track & Field Club will represent the City of Alexandria and compete in local track meets held around the metropolitan area June - August. Club members will receive the basic skills and techniques of track and field with the emphasis placed on teamwork, sportsmanship, commitment and healthy competition. Limited space is available. The club will practice on Tuesday & Thursday from 6 - 8 pm at T.C. Williams High School and compete in track meets on the weekend at Falls Church High School. Participant's age is determined by their age as of August 30, 2013.

Girls Field Hockey League (Ages 9 - 14)

The field hockey program is designed to expose girls to the sport of field hockey. The season will run June 10 - July 26. The league will be divided into two age divisions, ages 9 - 11 and ages 12 - 14. Program age is determined by the age of the participant as of July 31, 2013 for both divisions. Participants must provide their own field hockey sticks, shin guards, goggles and mouthpieces. Participant's age is determined by their age as of July 31, 2013

Basketball Fundamentals School (Ages 5 - 12)

This program will focus on teaching youth the basic skills used in the game of basketball. Participants will learn through repetition of drills and contest Youth will have fun while they develop and improve their playing ability under the direction of qualified instructors. The program will take place July 6, 13, 20 and 27 at Francis Hammond Middle School. Participant's age is determined by their age as of July 31, 2013.

Summer Basketball League (Ages 12 - 17)

Boys and girls teams will be formed in two divisions (Ages 12 - 14 & 15 - 17). Boys teams are formed by a player skill assessment and draft. Girls teams are formed by recreation districts. The skills assessment will take place on Tuesday, June 11 at Francis Hammond Middle School. Participants ages 12 - 14 should attend at 6 p.m. Participants ages 15 - 17 should attend at 7 p.m. All team practices and league games will be played during the week. Participant's age is determined by their age as of June 1, 2013.

Non-Contact & Tackle Rugby (Ages 6 - 14)

The non-contact rugby program is designed to incorporate the basic  rugby skills of running, passing, team support and decision making in a physically safe and non-threatening environment. Alexandria Rugby offers U11 and U15 tackle in both the spring and summer for boys only. The teams play organize tackle teams in the Rugby Virginia’s youth tackle leagues. Both programs are now run by Alexandria Rugby Club, Inc. a community based non-profit organization. Program age is determined by the age of the participant as of January 1. Youth Boxing Program (Ages 8-17)

Alexandria Boxing Club, Inc. Learn basic boxing skills. The boxing program consists of training in eight disciplines, and all necessary equipment is provided. Registrations are accepted Mon Fri, 6 8 pm at the Fred Smith Boxing Center, 901 Wythe St. Parental permission required.
