Real property in the City of Alexandria is annually assessed and by law, the assessed value is required to be 100% of the estimated fair market value as of January 1 of the tax year. To ensure the accuracy and equity of assessments, the Department of Real Estate Assessments appraisal staff reviews and analyzes sales information throughout the City to account for changes in value due to appreciation as well as updating the records to reflect any new buildings, additions, remodeling, land divisions, etc.
If you should have questions about the assessment process or a specific property in the City of Alexandria not addressed on the web site, you are invited to visit the Department of Real Estate Assessments by stopping at the service counter at 301 King Street, Room 2600, Alexandria, Virginia, between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M., Monday through Friday, when City Hall is open for normal business activities. Appraisers are available to address your questions or discuss the assessed value of your property, and will be happy to explain the review and appeal process.
Please e-mail us or call us at 703-746-4646, if we can be of any further assistance. Our goal is to ensure assessments are uniform and equitable for all properties in the City.
