Sheriff Dana Lawhorne
A Message from the Sheriff
Dear Neighbors and Friends,
Last November, I was honored to be re-elected to serve as your Sheriff and begin my third term on January 1. Your confidence in our Office and in me carries a great responsibility, and I’m very thankful for your support as we look forward to the next four years.
Already, this year has been a rewarding one with the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center being reaccredited by the American Correctional Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Corrections which cited our Office for its high quality of jail management. Alexandria received 100 percent approval on each of the applicable mandatory standards and obtained 97.7 percent compliance on non-mandatory standards. With this accreditation, the Detention Center has maintained its “Triple Crown Award” from the National Sheriffs’ Association for its simultaneous accreditation from the ACA, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
Further, our presence in the community remains strong, with deputies deployed in February to increase law enforcement visibility in the North Ridge and Beverley Hills communities. Deputies also continued to respond during emergencies with several assisting with Meals On Wheels deliveries during snow storms, others supervising the Inmate Work Detail with snow removal and ice treatment at the Public Safety Center, and this Sheriff plowing neighborhood streets during two storms.
In the spring, our staff will be active with community outreach through First Thursday in Del Ray, the semi-annual Drug Take Back with Alexandria Police, and participation in Relay for Life. Our Office will again welcome seniors from T.C. Williams for their Senior Experience as well as provide instruction for criminal justice students in the classroom.
You can keep up to date on these activities and other Office news on this website and through social media, so please follow us on Facebook and Twitter and learn more about what your Sheriff’s Office is doing for Alexandria.
Thank you for your continued support,
Dana Lawhorne, Sheriff
