Alexandria Commission for the Arts Seeks Public Comment on
Proposed Revisions to the Acquired Art Policy

On Tuesday, July 15, the Alexandria Commission for the Arts held a public hearing on the City of Alexandria’s Policy on Acquired Art. The purpose of the public hearing was to gather community input on proposed revisions to the City’s Policy on Acquired Art.

Persons who were unable to attend the public hearing can send written comments to the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities, Attention: Cheryl Anne Colton, 1108 Jefferson St., Alexandria, VA 22314, or e-mail cherylanne.colton@alexandriava.gov. Written comments must be received by July 30, 2008.

On June 24, City Council received the Commission for the Arts’ recommendations for changes to the current policy. Comments from the public will be reported to City Council at their September 13, 2008 meeting.

The purpose of the Policy on Acquired Art is to encourage private and public entities to further the development and public awareness of art and cultural activities in the City of Alexandria. The goal is to integrate art into the City and to encourage economic development, stimulate interest in art, and enhance Alexandria’s reputation as a national leader in the arts. This Policy seeks to provide for future artistic endeavors and the promotion of Alexandria’s cultural heritage, strengthen community pride and foster tourism.
