Recycling at Schools

Recycling Requirements

Public and Private elementary, secondary, and higher education facilities are responsible for providing recycling for students, staff, employees and tenants under the requirements described under Article H of Title 5, which was unanimously approved by City Council in February 2006.

Education and Outreach

With Robbie the Recycling Squirrel, elementary school students can learn about the recycling process first-hand. Along with Robbie, a recycling educator makes scheduled visits to schools, recreation centers, and youth groups to conduct recycling presentations. Youth will learn about recycling, reuse, waste reduction, recycled-content products, household hazardous waste, and other environmental issues.

For more information on educational programs offered by the Resource Recovery Division or to schedule a visit with Robbie the Recycling Squirrel, please contact a Recycling Specialist, City of Alexandria's Resource Recovery Division, at 703-746-HELP(4357) or send an e-mail to commercialrecycling@alexandriava.gov
