Capital Bikeshare in AlexandriaWhat's New
Program OverviewBike sharing is public transportation using bicycles, and cities around the world provide bike sharing systems as a transportation option for residents and visitors. The City of Alexandria's bike sharing program, in partnership with the District Department of Transportation and Arlington County, is called Capital Bikeshare. With Capital Bikeshare, you can choose from over 200 stations in the region, and return a bike to any station near your destination. Alta Bicycle Share operates the system for Alexandria, Arlington, and Washington, D.C. Alexandria joined the regional Capital Bikeshare network in September 2012, with eight bike share stations, and will expand stations to Del Ray and Carlyle in 2013. For more information about the bike share program, please call 703.746.4686 or email: localmotion@alexandriava.gov. Alexandria Station Locations - Map Expansion in AlexandriaNew Capital Bikeshare stations will be added in the Del Ray, Carlyle, and Old Town areas in 2013. Station locations will be selected from locations suggested by the public, and preferences shown on the interactive crowdsourcing map. Suggested locations will be evaluated using criteria including connectivity to transit to expand between metrorail stations, mixed-use activity centers, potential bicycle activity, proximity to other Capital Bikeshare stations, as well technical considerations. Some technical considerations include direct sunlight, at least 11' X 32' of space, a minimum of a quarter mile from another station, sidewalk pedestrian clearance, flat ground and utility clearance. Below are a list of meetings to gain input from residents over the next month, or also please share your thoughts by emailing us at localmotion@alexandriava.gov
