  • Emergency Medical Services are a division of the Fire Department. Medics work in EMS only and are not trained as firefighters.
  • All Firefighters are EMT-B.
  • Apparatus Maintenance is a function of the Fire Department.
  • Usual variety of buggies are assigned to Senior Staff/ Fire Marshals. Currently using Ford Explorers and Chevy Tahoes.
  • AFD formerly used the "50" series of numbers for stations to differentiate from Fairfax County which used numbers 1-49, ACFD which used the "70" series, and Federal (or formally federal) which used the "60" series. Alexandria currently uses "2" as the first number of a 3 digit number. The Washington Metro area has adopted this system on the Virginia side of the river. Numbers have been designated for DCFD, PGFD and MCFRD but they are not doing so at this time.
  • Virginia departments that have adopted the 3 digit system include: Alexandria (200), Arlington (100), Fairfax County & Fairfax City (400), Loudoun (600), and Prince William (500) and Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (300).
  • Maryand departments that have adopted the 3 digit system include: Montgomery County (700) and Prince Georges County (800).
