September 11 Remembered, First Responders Honored with Special Events

Sheriff Dana Lawhorne and members of the Sheriff’s Office recently participated in several special events memorializing the September 11 tragedy and honoring public safety personnel.

On Sunday, September 8, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities saluted the City’s first responders with a ceremony and series of football games. Sheriff Lawhorne and Deputy Charles Poarch represented the Sheriff’s Office at the “First Responders Cup Day” organized by DRPCA’s Sports Section. The ceremony, hosted by Mac Slover and also attended by Fire Chief Adam Thiel and other members of the Fire Department, was held at the George Washington Middle School athletic fields. Each year, in recognition of the September 11, 2001, attacks, the Alexandria Titans Youth Football Program plays Arlington County youth teams for the First Responders Cup. Alexandria won the competition and will retain the First Responders Cup for the next year.

On Tuesday, September 10, Clyde’s restaurant in Alexandria paid tribute to the region’s first responders, treating them to a cookout and live entertainment outside its Mark Center location. Sheriff Lawhorne and Sheriff’s Office staff joined Police Chief Earl Cook and Fire Chief Thiel, members of their agencies, as well as the Department of Emergency Communications and law enforcement agencies from across Northern Virginia. Clyde’s first began this annual tradition in the days after the September 11 terrorist attacks to recognize the dedication of local first responders.

Then on Wednesday, September 11, Alexandria hosted its annual September 11 Remembrance Ceremony at Market Square. The Combined Public Safety Honor Guard presented the colors and Mayor William D. Euille, Sheriff Lawhorne, Chief Cook and Chief Thiel provided brief remarks as part of the ceremony which also featured the signing of Harold L. Blackford, Jr., and a rendition of “Taps” by Fire Lieutenant Matt Craig. City Manager Rashad Young and representatives from the City’s public safety agencies memorialized the lives lost at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and Somerset County, Pa., with the “Return to Quarters” bell-ringing ceremony. The entire program can be viewed online.
