Volunteers Honored at Annual Appreciation Luncheon

The Sheriff’s Office paid tribute to its dedicated volunteers at the annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, October 25, at First Baptist Church. More than 200 volunteers provide specialized assistance and services to inmates at the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center, offering religious services, Bible study, substance abuse recovery programs, tutoring, yoga and even musical instruction.

Lieutenant Deborah Vaughan served as the emcee at the luncheon which was held in the Faith Activities Center and approximately 60 volunteers attended. Audience members were treated to a video produced by Volunteer Programs Coordinator Cherye Echane that showed volunteers at work in the jail and expressions of appreciation from the inmates, and Reverend Myron Contee, the Sheriff’s Office Chaplain, gave the invocation.

After lunch, Bettina Deynes, the new Human Resources Director for the City of Alexandria, gave the keynote speech which both volunteers and staff found to be very thoughtful and inspiring. Ms. Deynes then joined Sheriff Dana Lawhorne in presenting each volunteer with a certificate of appreciation and a special gift, a brown fleece throw blanket embroidered with “Alexandria Sheriff’s Office Volunteer” in gold.

Sheriff Lawhorne offered closing remarks, expressing his deep gratitude to the Office’s talented and committed volunteer corps.
