Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities FY 2014 Service Expectations

On May 6, City Council adopted a $624.8 million General Fund Operating Budget for Fiscal Year (FY) 2014, an increase of 6.3% from FY 2013. Despite challenging economic conditions, the goal of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities is to maintain its core services. As costs continue to increase in providing core services to residents, some service adjustments have been made.

The following information provides residents with service expectations for the FY 2014 fiscal year (July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014): 
 

CITY MARINA

Reduction of night time security hours. For additional information on the City Marina, visit City Marina & Waterfront Parks.

HORTICULTURAL AREAS

Eliminate planting of annuals (seasonal flowers) at approximately 38 City-maintained landscaped sites, including landscaped sites on school grounds. The City will maintain current level of services at: Founders Park, City Hall/Market Square, Ramsay Visitor Center, 100 N. through 200 S. blocks of Washington St. medians, Court House, Lyceum, and Black History Center. Residents may participate in the Adopt-A-Garden program to provide volunteer horticultural activities in non-funded planting beds. For additional information, call 703.746.5484.

RECREATION CENTER OPERATING HOURS

  • Charles Houston Recreation Center will eliminate the Early Morning Fitness pass program (6 am to 9 am) Monday - Friday.
  • The Charles Barrett, Mt. Vernon, and Patrick Henry Recreation Centers will not operate on Martin Luther King Day, Presidents Day, the day after Thanksgiving.
  • Cora Kelly, Charles Barrett and Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center new operating hours:
    • Cora Kelly Recreation Center (effective August 12, 2013)
      Monday - Friday: 9 am to 9 pm
      Saturday: 9 am to 6 pm
      Sunday: Closed
    • Charles Barrett Recreation Center (effective September 1, 2013)
      Monday - Friday: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. (September through mid-June)
      Saturday & Sunday: Closed
    • Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center  (effective September 1, 2013)
      Monday - Friday: 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Sep through mid-Jun)
      Saturday: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Oct through March)
      Sunday: Closed

REDUCTION IN ART GRANT AWARDS

The Office of the arts decreases the total amount in grants provided by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts by 6%.

ANNUAL CITY BIRTHDAY PROGRAM REDUCTIONS

The Office of Special events eliminated community activities from 4 pm to 7 pm, paid performances and the official program begins at 7pm with City announcements, Birthday Cake distribution, Alexandria Symphony Orchestra performance and Grand Finale Firework Display.

FEE ADJUSTMENTS

The Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities increased fees for City Marina Docking, Therapeutic Recreation Programs, Youth Sports Registration, Summer Youth Programs, After School Youth Programs, Aquatic Programs, and Chinquapin Recreation Center activities and rentals.
