Our Mission

The Alexandria Police Department and the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office collected 196 pounds of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at the sixth National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Saturday, April 27, 2013, from 10 A.M. to 2 P.M., the two Alexandria law enforcement agencies, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Coalition of Alexandria, collected potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs and other medications for destruction at two sites in the City.

On Saturday, March 22, Officer Steve Escobar and "Gracie," Officer Kyle Russel and "Chance," and Officer Mark Wuckovich and "Rocco" were honored at the United States Police Canine Association Region 3 Awards Banquet. All three handlers and their K-9 partners received Patrol Dog 1 Certification. Officer Wuckovich and “Rocco” were awarded with the T. Patrick Cahill Award. This award is given to the individual team with the highest score in Obedience and Criminal Apprehension. Officer Steve Escobar and "Gracie" and Officer Mark Wuckovich and "Rocco" were also named a Region Three Triple Crown, indicating the team is certified in Detection, Patrol Dog 1 and Tracking within a calendar year.

As part of the on-site accreditation re-certification process, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments addressing the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards at a public information session. The session will be conducted in the Alexandria Police Department’s Community Room, 3600 Wheeler Avenue, on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 5:00 p.m.

On April 23, 2012, Officer Peter Laboy returned home after spending nearly two months in the hospital recovering from a gun shot would to the head sustained on February 27. Family and friends are overjoyed to have Officer Laboy home. His homecoming represents a step forward in Officer Laboy's rehabilitation, which is expected to take up to a year.  On February 27, 2013, Officer Peter Laboy was seriously injured during a routine traffic stop that resulted in a shooting. At 11:44 a.m., an officer with the Alexandria Police Department issued a look out for a yellow cab regarding a minor offense. Almost immediately, a Motor Unit officer spotted the suspect vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Shortly after, the Department of Emergency Communications began receiving 911 calls for an officer down. The officer was flown to Medstar with life-threatening injuries.

The Alexandria Police Foundation has received $15,000 grant as part of the Motorola Solutions Foundation’s Public Safety and Security Institute. The Motorola Solutions Foundation is the charitable arm of Motorola Solutions Inc. Through the grant, The Police Foundation will use the grant money to assist in the installation of a Memorial at the Alexandria Police Headquarters Building to honor fallen officers.

In 2012, there were no homicides in City of Alexandria. This marks the first time in at least 42 years that the City experienced a year without a homicide. Additionally, initial crime statistics, though not final, indicate violent crime decreased again in 2012. This continues the trend of historic lows in Alexandria. The Alexandria Police Department’s success in continuing to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods is a direct result of the quality, hard work and dedication of our sworn, civilian and volunteer staff. The Police Department remains committed to keeping crime low and maintaining a safe and vibrant community.

On Friday, December 21, eighteen Alexandria Police Department recruits graduated from the 127th session of the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy’s Basic Law Enforcement School. The graduation ceremony was held at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

The recruits will be state certified in basic law enforcement after completing a four month field training program. The new officers are Trent Ashman, Adam Bing, John Brattelli, Jonathan Ellis, Robert Faulkner, Michael Garcia, Trevor Griffin, John Hancq, Joshua Holderness, Hayden Johnson, Jessica Johnson, Daryl Moore, George Nformi, Stephen Riley, Carl Savoy, Jr., Paul Smith, Wesley Vitale and Adam Zastrow.

All persons having valid claim to the property should file a claim to the property with reasonable proof of ownership or the items will be sold, destroyed, converted or donated.
