May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month

The Alexandria Health Department joins organizations nationwide to raise awareness among teens and their parents on abstinence, relationships, sex, contraception, and the lifelong challenges of being a parent.

Here is some good news…

  • The teen birth rate in the U.S. dropped from 61.8 births per 1,000 teens aged 15-19 years in 1991 to 26.5 births per 1,000 teens in 2013.
  • The City of Alexandria’s 2013 teen pregnancy rate dropped to 24.8 births per 1,000 teens compared to 30.9 births per 1,000 teens in 2012. This is the lowest teen pregnancy rate in Alexandria in more than 17 years!

Why we continue to be committed…

In 2013 there were approximate 273,000 births to teens in the United States - far more than many developed countries. Unfortunately, health disparities continue to exist with Non-Hispanic Blacks, American Indian/Alaska Native, Hispanic/Latino youth and socioeconomically disadvantaged youth of any race or ethnicity experiencing the highest teen pregnancy and birth rates.

The social and economic impact of pregnancy on teen parents, their families, their children and society are significant.

  • In 2011, teenage pregnancy and childbirth cost U.S. taxpayers an estimated $9.4 billion
  • Teen mothers experience more low birth weight babies, preterm delivery and higher infant mortality rates
  • Only about 50% of teen moms receive their high school diploma by their 22nd birthday, versus approximately 90% of women who had not given birth during adolescence
  • Children of teen mothers are more likely to have health problems, lower school achievement, be teen parents themselves and face unemployment as a young adult

What can be done…

National and local organizations, healthcare providers, parents and teens can join together to prevent teenage pregnancy by:

  • Increasing awareness in teens about relationships, abstinence, sex and contraception
  • Talking to teens about sex and encouraging them not to become sexually active
  • Providing access to affordable and highly effective family planning methods for those teens that chose to have sex
  • Encouraging teens to talk openly to parents or other trusted adults about their relationships and any questions they may have
  • Being supportive of parenting teens in completing their education and raising healthy children

The Teen Wellness Center located at T.C. Williams High School continues to empower teens to lead healthy lives.
