Fire Department Wreath Laying and Memorial Service
The Alexandria Fire Department will observe National Fire Prevention Week on Friday, October 8, with a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying at 11 a.m. The solemn ceremony is held each year at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 2823 King Street, to honor those who have died in the line of duty and to mark the passing of those members of the department who died during the preceding 12 months. During 2010 there have been one job related line of duty death of a retiree; six retired members of the department died during the past year.
Ivy Hill Cemetery, will be hosting the memorial service. A fire truck parked on each side of the cemetery’s entrance will provide the framework from which a large American flag is suspended. Just outside of Old Town, Ivy Hill’s park-like setting offers a quiet place to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters throughout the history of the City of Alexandria.
