City of Alexandria Receives Tree City USA Designation

The Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Alexandria a 2007 Tree City USA community in honor of the City’s commitment to community forestry. It is the 25th year the City has received this national recognition. The Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service, sponsors the Tree City USA program. Alexandria is one of 50 named Tree City USA Communities within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Alexandria has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community: a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance.

“We are pleased that the City has been designated as a Tree City community for the twenty-fifth year,” said Mayor William D. Euille. “This honor underscores the long-term commitment that the City and its residents have had to living ‘green;’ to planting and caring for the community forest; and to protecting this most vital part of our infrastructure.”

For more information about the Tree City USA designation, please contact John Noelle, City Arborist, at 703.838. 4999.  For more information about Arbor Day in Virginia (April 25), visit http://www.arborday.org/states/index.cfm?state=VA
