On Wednesday, Oct. 8, thousands of students, parents and community members representing more than 3,800 schools across the United States will walk to school to celebrate International Walk to School Day. This one-day event is part of an international effort to encourage more families to enjoy the many benefits of safely walking to school. As part of the update to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan, and the development of Complete Streets Guidelines, the City has developed an online survey and interactive map to allow users to identify where they would like to see pedestrian and bicycle improvements and locations for future Capital Bikeshare stations. The survey and map are available in English and Spanish and will be available for input through late October 2014. The first public meeting was held on September 30, to introduce the project and receive input on pedestrian and bicycle issues and needs. The second Ad Hoc Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plan Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Thursday, October 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. at TC Williams High School, 330 King Street.
Sponsored by the City of Alexandria, the Van Start and Van Save programs provides temporary funding (up to $2,000) for vanpools having trouble filling all of their seats. The Van Start Program, which funds empty seats during the critical start up phase of new vanpools; and the Van Save Program, which is for existing vanpools that are experiencing problems in their passenger levels due to the loss of riders.
