The City produces a variety of podcasts highlighting City news, events and information. Podcasting is a method of publishing audio and video programs via the Internet, allowing users to subscribe to a "feed" of new audio files. The City of Alexandria was one of the first local governments in the United States to use podcasting to reach new audiences.
To subscribe to podcasts, you need "podcatching" software (also called a podcast reader or aggregator), which periodically checks for and downloads new content automatically. The most popular podcasting software is the free
iTunes. Once you download a podcast, you can listen to or watch it on your computer or copy it onto your iPod or other portable media player. Although podcast combines the words "iPod" and "broadcast," it does not require an Apple iPod.
