The City of Alexandria will host a virtual Flood Mitigation Grant outreach meeting on Monday, September 25 from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. The meeting will help property owners understand the types of flood mitigation practices that can be installed, the type of documentation required, and the process to apply to receive up to $5,000 of a 50/50 matching grant from the City. The Flood Mitigation Grant Program provides financial incentives for property owners that install eligible flood protection practices. These practices can provide property protection in the near term while large capital flood mitigation projects are being designed and implemented. The City is also seeking community input on potential program updates to offer more residents opportunities to receive grant funding, while continuing to streamline the application process.

While the pilot program launched in 2021 required documentation of prior flooding to target the most impacted properties, staff is proposing to remove this requirement to open the program to more property owners and reduce the possibility of future flood damage. Additionally, the City is seeking community input on funding implementation of flood mitigation practices for condominium homeowner associations’ common areas. Staff would like to discuss these proposed updates with community members in advance of making updates to the program.
