City's Community Rating System Annual Progress Reports Now Available
Alexandria is a participant in the Community Rating System (CRS) program administered by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The CRS is a voluntary incentive program that recognizes and encourages communities to implement floodplain management activities that exceed those required by the NFIP.
Communities are urged to meet three goals:
- Reduce flood damage to insurable property
- Strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP
- Encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.
Because of Alexandria's participation in the CRS, City residents may receive a discount of up to 20% on flood insurance premiums (contact your homeowner's or renter's policy provider for more information). As of April 30, 2023, there were 1,343 flood insurance policies in force in Alexandria.
As part of the CRS, Alexandria adopted the Northern Virginia Hazard Mitigation Plan and its subsequent update in 2017, which includes the City's Hazard Mitigation Plan. To continue receiving credit for the Floodplain Management/Hazard Mitigation Plan activities, the City must submit annual public progress reports, which are now available online at alexandriava.gov/3516.
