City of Alexandria Receives Accreditation from the American Public Works Association
The American Public Works Association (APWA) has granted accreditation status to the City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES).
APWA is a national, professional membership organization for public works agencies. APWA accreditation is a voluntary process that formally verifies public works departments for compliance with recommended practices that the organization has determined are necessary to perform as a full-service public works agency. This is the department’s fifth APWA accreditation.
“T&ES is honored to once again receive APWA accreditation, which recognizes exceptional public works agencies in North America,” said Tarrence Moorer, Interim Director of T&ES. “Accreditation is an accomplishment that acknowledges the excellent programs and services that T&ES administers and the many staff members who work each day to make them a success.”
T&ES received accreditation based on a review of the City department’s public works policies, practices, and benchmarks covering areas such as solid waste and recycling management, street cleaning, fleet management, traffic operations, transportation, personnel safety, and stormwater management, among others. APWA reviewed 132 of the management practices submitted by T&ES and found all of those submissions to be in full compliance with the organization’s standards.
APWA also recognized five of the submissions as “model practices” that it will use as examples for other jurisdictions.
On February 7, Jeffrey Brown, APWA's Regional Director and Public Works Director of Morrisville, North Carolina, visited Alexandria and joined T&ES for a celebration breakfast, the reading of a proclamation by Mayor Justin Wilson, and a City tour.
The City of Alexandria is one of 10 accredited agencies in Virginia and one of 179 accredited public works agencies across North America.
