Sheriff’s Office and Adult Detention Center Earn Reaccreditation
For Immediate Release: August 15, 2023
The American Correctional Association’s Commission on Accreditation for Corrections has formally reaccredited the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office (ASO) and William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center (ADC) and recognized ASO for excellence in jail operations.
The ACA presented ASO with an official Certificate of Accreditation during its recent summer conference in Philadelphia. Sheriff Sean Casey accepted the award following a panel review with Commission members on August 11. He was joined by Chief Deputy Shelbert Williams, Accreditation Manager Gayle Reuter and ADA/PREA Coordinator Candra Callicott.
The ACA accreditation examines all facets of jail operations, including administration and management, physical plant, institutional operations and services, and inmate programs. In February, three auditors conducted a three-day onsite inspection of the ADC and interviewed staff as well as inmates during their visit.
Following the inspection and subsequent review, ACA found ASO to be in 100 percent compliance with all 57 applicable mandatory standards. In addition, ASO received a 99.3 percent score for being in compliance with 300 out of 302 applicable non-mandatory standards.
“We are proud to have earned ACA accreditation and to know that our policies and practices continue to meet their rigorous standards,” says Sheriff Casey. “This is also a very positive reflection on our staff and I thank them for their commitment, professionalism and compassion.”
With the ACA accreditation, the Sheriff’s Office has maintained its “Triple Crown Award” from the National Sheriffs’ Association for achieving simultaneous accreditation from the ACA, the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. ASO has held continuous accreditation with ACA since 1989.
