City Seeks Feedback on LED Light Demonstration at Ben Brenman Park
The City has taken the first steps in the process to transition Alexandria Parks lighting to all LED, with a demonstration installation at Ben Brenman Park (4800 Brenman Park Dr) and the City would like your feedback. Now through May 7, residents can visit the park to view the eight demonstration LED streetlights, which are installed in the parking lot and adjacent trail located south of the lighted soccer field and just north of Brenman Park Drive (see graphic below). The team is looking for feedback about the brightness of the demo lights to gauge whether individual lights may need to be dimmed in certain areas. Comments can be emailed to matt.melkerson@alexandriava.gov until May 7.
These changes are part of the City's Environmental Action Plan (EAP) 2040 which includes a goal to retrofit 75% of all city facility lighting to LED light. These new lights have many benefits over the current mercury vapor and high-pressure sodium streetlights used in our parks, including:
- Reduction in maintenance repair costs
- Reduction in energy used to power the lights
- Increase in the useful life of the light bulb itself
- Higher quality light and light distribution, making park trails and walkways safer at night
The next steps will be to complete LED light installation throughout Ben Brenman Park, the Linear Park Trail, and Armistead L Boothe Park. Installation is estimated to be complete by early Fall 2023.
