City of Alexandria Sixth Annual LGBTQ+ Pride Month Fair
City of Alexandria Sixth Annual LGBTQ+ Pride Month Fair
For Immediate Release: May 24, 2023
Celebrate Alexandria Pride! The City of Alexandria will kick off the Sixth Annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ+) Pride Month on June 3 with a Pride fair at City Hall and Market Square, 301 King Street.
Back by popular demand, the event line-up includes Drag Queen Story Hour at 2 p.m., Spoken Word at 3 p.m. and an Improv Workshop at 4 p.m. These programs will take place inside City Hall. Outside, visitors can collect Pride swag, dance to the music of DJ B, enjoy sweet treats and face painting, pose for Pride pictures, make art, check out LGBTQ+ books, and learn about LGBTQ+ inclusive programs in Alexandria. Free and confidential health services and vaccines will be available inside City Hall. Mayor Wilson will also present the 2023 Pride Proclamation.
LGBTQ+ Pride Month is recognized each year to celebrate LGBTQ+ people and the influence they have had around the world, as well as raise awareness of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community and the struggle for civil rights. June was chosen as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969, when activists protested police raids on the Stonewall Inn – an LGBTQ bar in New York City. The rebellion served as a catalyst and provided the spark that ignited the LGBTQ rights movement in the United States.
