The City Council Naming Committee has put forward six public streets to be considered for renaming as part of the City’s Confederate Street Renaming Initiative. Following a public engagement period, the full Alexandria City Council will select three streets to be renamed in the first of a fifteen-year process.
Community members will have the opportunity to weigh in on proposed names or suggest alternatives at an open public hearing on November 30 at 6 p.m. at Alexandria City Hall (301 King St.). A Street Renaming Feedback Form is available for those unable to attend.

About the Renaming Process
In January 2023, the Historic Alexandria Resources Commission (HARC) was charged by Mayor Justin Wilson with the development of a list of individuals worthy of honor by the City. In August, 63 names were submitted for consideration to the Naming Committee. Learn about the work of the HARC Street Name Research Committee in its Commission Report.
The City Council Naming Committee determined the order for street renaming based on household and commercial impact as well as historical significance. Five of the selected streets were confirmed to be named for Confederate military leaders following a 1953 City ordinance. Of those streets, three have less than 100 residents or businesses that will be impacted. This year’s sampling will allow the City to assess costs and residential concerns more accurately in the coming years. View the impacted streets on a map.
The street renaming process is a reflection of our community, defined by the City’s commitment to the ALL Alexandria Resolution. Visit alexandriava.gov/Equity for more information on the City’s race and social equity commitment.
