For Immediate Release: August 10, 2022
The Commission on Professional Credentialing (CPC) recently voted unanimously to reconfirm Alexandria Fire Department Operations Assistant Chief Andrew Duke’s Chief EMS Officer and Chief Fire Officer designations. Chief Duke earned the professional designations as witnessed by a team of his peers and members of CPC.
The Chief EMS Officer (CEMSO) and Chief Fire Officer (CFO) designations show that Chief Duke has demonstrated through his education, leadership, and management skills that he possesses the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the fire and emergency services profession. Chief Duke is one of 165 Chief EMS Officers and one of 1,755 Chief Fire Officers internationally.
“The credentialing process offers an opportunity to conduct a peer reviewed assessment of your professional growth,” said Chief Duke. “It helps you develop a comprehensive professional development strategy, and it’s recommended for Fire Department staff who want to position themselves for success when future opportunities arise.”
Accreditation Manager Joe Beavan also recommends the credentialing process to Fire Department staff and other fire and emergency services professional who are interested in becoming a more well-rounded Firefighter/EMT.
“Assistant Chief Duke receiving his Chief EMS Officer and Chief Fire Officer designations is one of many examples of how the Alexandria Fire Department continues to make intentional efforts to raise the expectations for professional development for our workforce,” said Fire/EMS Chief Corey Smedley. “We support the professional growth of our staff and expect that the result of their future success will help us better serve the Alexandria community and move our organization forward.”
Chief Duke began his career with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department as a firefighter and paramedic in 1990. He worked in every operational capacity from firefighter to captain before being promoted to a command officer in 2008. After more than 30 years of service in Fairfax County, Chief Duke joined the Alexandria Fire Department in June 2020 as the Operations Assistant Chief. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Health Services Management from the College of Health Sciences and a Master of Public Administration from George Mason University.
