The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions, and committees. Council will act on these vacancies at the November 12, 2024, City Council meeting. All applicants must complete an Application Form electronically via the City’s website at boards.alexandriava.gov/application/ no later than 5:00 p.m. on November 1, 2024. Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council. Applicants may only submit an application for one committee at a time.
MULTIPLE or DUPLICATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Please note the meaning of the following terminology related to board vacancies:
Expiring Term – denotes a current member's term will be ending soon. There may or may not be an incumbent applying for the position.
Expired Term - denotes a term completed and no one is in the position.
Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: Task Force meets quarterly.
One vacancy for consideration:
One at-large youth member, due to an expired term.
Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One Landlord of a residential property in the City, due to an expired term.
One Builder/Developer of Residential property, due to an expired term.
One representative of the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to a resignation.
Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority- 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: fourth Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expired term.
Archaeological Commission – 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets at 7:00p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month.
One vacancy for consideration:
One Visit Alexandria representative, due to a resignation.
Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expired term.
Beautification Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expiring term.
Two members with expertise in the field of landscape architecture or landscape design, due to a resignation and an expired term.
Board of Zoning Appeals – 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Monday of the month at 7pm.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expired term
Building Code Board of Appeals - 5-year term
Meeting Schedule: meetings are called when appeals are filed.

Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Wednesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One ACPS employee identified by the superintendent, due to an expired term
Citizen Corps Council – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: fourth Monday of every other month.
Five vacancies for consideration:
One representative of the Emergency Medical Services Council, Medical Reserve Corps, or a person with emergency medical response experience, due to an expiring term.
One representative of the Crime Prevention Council, or an individual with law enforcement or crime prevention experience, due to an expired term.
One representative of the business community, due to an expired term.
One representative from Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to an expired term.
One member designated by an Alexandria School Board member, due to an expired term.
Commission for the Arts – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One professional in the field related to the visual appearance of the city landscape, such as architecture, environmental design, landscape architecture or urban design, due to an expired term.
Commission for Women – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One youth member, due to an expired term.
One citizen member, due to and expiring term.
Commission on Employment – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m.
Three vacancies for consideration:
Two representatives from a recognized area business including minority-owned and small businesses, due to an expired term.
One representative from such organization as educational agencies, organized labor, rehabilitation agencies community-based organizations, economic development agencies and the area public employment service, due to an expired term.
Commission on HIV/AIDS – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m.
Seventeen vacancies for consideration:
Eight citizen members, due to expired terms and resignations.
One Sheriff’s Designee, due to an expired term.
One HIV/AIDS service organization representative which provided services in the City to the minority community, due to an expired term.
One local Gay and Lesbian Community Association (AGLCA) representative, due to an expired term.
One representative from Hospice of Northern Virginia, due to an expired term.
One Alexandria Community Services Board representative, due to an expired term.
One ACPS representative, due to an expired term.
One member who is a practicing physician, due to a resignation.
One member for and representing Inova Juniper, due to a resignation.
One Commission for Women representative, due to an expiring term.
Commission on Information Technology – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets on the second or third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Four vacancies for consideration:
Two citizen members, due to expiring terms.
One Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee representative, due to an expired term.
One student representing Alexandria City High School, recommended by the faculty, due to a resignation.
Commission on Persons with Disabilities – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One representative of the Alexandria Commission on Aging, due to an expiring term.
One Chamber of Commerce business representative, due to an expired term.
Community Criminal Justice Board – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m.
Five vacancies for consideration:
One sheriff member, due to administrative action.
One person appointed by City Council to serve as its representative
One representative of the business community recommended by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce.
One representative of local education to be nominated by the Superintendent of Schools, due to an expired term.
One representative of non-profit organizations recommended by the Alexandria United Way, due to an expired term.
Community Services Board – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One consumer member currently receiving service, due to an expired term.
Economic Opportunities Commission– 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Five vacancies for consideration:
Two Category I – elected public officials currently holding office, or their representatives appointed by the City Council, due to an expired term and a resignation.
One Category I - elected public official (State representative) currently holding office, due to an expired term.
Two Category III - representatives of business industry, labor, religious, welfare or other private groups and interests certified by the Commission, due to an expired term.
Emergency Medical Services Council – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets quarterly at the call of the Chair.

One representative for the Emergency Nurses Association from Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term.
One Emergency Room Physician from Alexandria Hospital, due to an expired term.
One Emergency Medical Services Division Director, due to an expired term.
Environmental Policy Commission – 2-year term

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – 2-year term

One member nominated by the City of Alexandria Chapter of the daughters of the American Revolution, due to an expiring term.
One member who attends high school in the City of Alexandria, due to an expired term.
One city manager or a designee, due to an expired term.
One member to be nominated by the City of Alexandria Pipe and Drums, due to an expired term.
Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

One Historical Restoration & Preservation Commission representative, due to a resignation

Human Rights Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

One low-income tenant representative, due to an expired term.
One landlord of a residential property in the city representative, due to an expired term.
Local Emergency Planning Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair quarterly.
One vacancy for consideration:
One owner and operator of facilities subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of Super Fund Amendments and reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to an expired term.
Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One member representing the Potomac East area, due to an expired term.
One qualified professional skilled in landscape architecture, architecture or urban design, due to an expired term.
One National Park Service representative, due to an expired term.
Public Health Advisory Commission– 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
Six vacancies for consideration:
Two health professional citizen member, due to an expiring and expired term.
One non-health professional citizen member, due to an expiring term.
One Alexandria City School Board representative, due to a resignation.
One fire department representative, due to admin action.
One dentist practicing in the city nominated by the NOVA Dental Society, due to an expired term.
Public Records Advisory Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to expired term.
Sister Cities Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expiring term.
Social Services Advisory Board – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One citizen member, due to an expiring term.
One client of the Department of Social Service, due to expired term.
Towing Advisory Board – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: at least once, but no more than quarterly meetings annually, and may also have special meetings at the call of the chairperson.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen at-large with preference given to a citizen who has expertise in property management or who is a business owner, due to a resignation.
Urban Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: semi-annual meetings, with additional meetings scheduled on the first Wednesday of the month on an as-needed basis.
One vacancy for consideration:
One representative of the Old Town North business community, due to an expiring term.
Waterfront Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 a.m.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One representative from the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, due to an expiring term.
One Chamber of Commerce representative, due to an expired term.
One Planning District III representative, due to an expired term.
Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.
Applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency waiver is granted by Council.
