City Offices Closed Until 10 a.m. Friday, Teams Mobilize in Preparation for Winter Weather
The City of Alexandria continues to monitor and respond to ongoing weather conditions. The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for our region for tomorrow, Friday, Jan. 19, between 4 a.m. and 7 p.m. Total snow accumulation of 2-3 inches is predicted for the Washington Metropolitan area.
Additionally, Saturday is expected to bring bitterly cold wind chills with gusty winds and low temperatures (high: 27 degrees; low: 18 degrees; wind chill: 4 degrees). Residents are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling. Additionally, extra care should be taken when walking on steps, sidewalks, and driveways, which may be icy and slippery.
City/Schools Hours of Operation
For Friday, January 19, City government facilities will open at 10 a.m., and courts will be closed. Any exceptions will be noted at alexandriava.gov. All Alexandria City Public Schools and school offices will be closed tomorrow, Friday, January 19. For Alexandria City Public Schools operating status, visit www.acps.k12.va.us/emergency.
Snow Response
The Department of Transportation & Environmental Services (T&ES) mobilized its snow and ice crews this evening at 7 p.m. and will provide 24-hour coverage for the duration of the event. The City will continue to track weather forecasts, adjusting response plans accordingly.
The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Affairs (RPCA) also activated its winter weather response crews this evening at 7 p.m., and the Department of General Services (DGS) activated at 8 p.m. Both agencies will monitor the weather and adjust response plans as needed. Urban Forestry remains on call 24 hours per day.
Seasonal Warming Centers and Winter Shelter
The City of Alexandria’s Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will be open 24 hours through Monday, January 22. To reach the Winter Shelter, call 571.652.9984. Neighborhood recreation centers and Alexandria Libraries will serve as warming centers during their normal operating hours. Hours may be extended if needed. Refuse and Recycling Collection
All trash, recycling, and yard waste will be suspended for the rest of the week, as will the curbside composting pilot. Regular collection services are expected to resume next week.
