Vision Zero Public Art
About the Project
Vision Zero is a City initiative and an international movement founded on the belief that traffic deaths and severe injuries are unacceptable. The FY2024-2026 Public Art Annual Workplan identified Vision Zero coordination as a top public art program priority and describes numerous areas for project development and potential for coordination in order to meet the Vision Zero goal of eliminating fatal and severe traffic injuries in the City of Alexandria by 2028.
The Public Art Annual Workplan recommends that a prototype project (or pilot) be initiated. An asphalt art pilot location has been identified through coordination with the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services in an area where curb extensions are planned. The appointed task force members are coordinating on the implementation of the pilot project and establishing criteria, guidelines, or a similar decision-making framework that could be considered for future projects.
For more information about the project, please review the Vision Zero Public Art Project Plan .
Current Opportunities
The City of Alexandria's Public Art Program is inviting artists/muralists to submit their qualifications to design and execute a street mural at a new mini-roundabout location in the City. This call is open to all local and regional professional artists living in Virginia, Maryland, or Washington D.C. The selected artist/muralist will be awarded $20,000 to design and execute the street mural. Artists that embrace community engagement strategies are encouraged to apply. Applications will be evaluated by a public art task force and the selected artist/muralist will be approved by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts in July. Installation is required by November 1, 2024. For more information and to apply visit CaFÉ (callforentry.org). For questions, please contact meika.daus@alexandriava.gov. The entry deadline is June 24, 2024.
About Vision Zero
Vision Zero is Alexandria's plan to eliminate fatal and severe injuries on our streets by 2028.
Vision Zero is a City initiative that is founded on the belief that traffic deaths and severe injuries are unacceptable. In Alexandria, we recognize that deaths and severe injuries are not inevitable “accidents”. They are preventable crashes that can be ended through engineering, enforcement, and education.
