The Alexandria Police Department reports that total Part 1 crime increased by 11 offenses (0.3%) in calendar year 2007. This less than 1% increase was caused primarily by a rise in larcenies, particularly thefts from automobiles. Despite this increase, Alexandria continues to experience record lows in its overall Part 1 crime rate. Homicide and larceny increased in 2007, while rape, robbery, burglary, aggravated assault and auto theft fell below levels recorded in calendar year 2006.

"Although the overall Part 1 crime rate rose slightly in 2007, continued reductions were achieved in five of the seven Part 1 crime categories," said Alexandria Police Chief David P. Baker. "I am pleased with the police department's performance, appreciative of the support we continue to receive from our residents, the Mayor, City Council, City Manager, and Commonwealth's Attorney and confident that we will reduce Part 1 crime this year to new record lows."
