July 1, 2012

The City of Alexandria continues to recover from the severe storms that resulted in significant power outages and widespread damage on Friday evening. The City is fully mobilized to respond to emergencies, protect public health and safety, and clear debris from public property. Residents are asked to remain patient as storm-related cleanup work continues, and to check on neighbors who may need assistance.

Please call 703.746.4488 to report downed trees and damage to homes and businesses. The City has also opened a special Storm Hotline, 703.746.HELP (703.746.4357), for heat-related questions. A number of City government facilities are open today as cooling centers:

·         Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St. (open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday)

·         Cora Kelly Recreation Center, 25 W. Reed Ave. (open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday)

·         Samuel Tucker Elementary School, 435 Ferdinand Day Dr. (open 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday)

·         Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, 3210 King St. (open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday)

The following City pools will be open on Sunday:

·         Old Town Pool, 1609 Cameron St. (open from 12 noon to 7 p.m.

·         Charles Houston Memorial Pool, 901 Wythe St.  (open from 12 noon to 6 p.m.)

If you are experiencing power outages, contact Dominion Virginia Power at 866.366.4357. As of 8 a.m. on Sunday, Dominion Virginia Power reported that approximately 22,600 customers were without electricity in Alexandria.  Customers without power should keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible, and discard any refrigerated or frozen food that has been at more than 41º F for more than two hours. Trash and recycling will be collected on a normal schedule this week, July 2-6, including the Independence Day holiday on July 4.
