City of Alexandria Hosts the 12th Annual
“A Walk in the Park...Strides Toward Success” Walkathon

The City of Alexandria will host the 12th annual “A Walk in the Park...Strides Toward Success” walkathon on Saturday, April 26, at Fort Ward Park, 4301 W. Braddock Rd. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and the walk begins at 9 a.m. The walkathon course is approximately two miles. All proceeds from the event will benefit Project Discovery-Alexandria, a program that helps low-income and/or first-generation students to succeed in getting into and completing college.

Suggested donations are $15 for adult walkers, $50 for teams of four adult walkers, $5 for students, and $20 for teams of five student walkers. Participants may register online at www.alexandriava.gov. All participants will receive free t-shirts and be eligible to win prizes. Prizes include gift certificates for Maid Brigade, The Warehouse Bar and Grill, a dinner cruise on the Dandy, and much more.

Major sponsors for this event include Alfred Street Baptist Church, Bittersweet Catering, Dawn Munson, Flippo Construction, Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., KUMON, L. Charles Fitzgerald, Marymount University, Pamela Smith, Selah Travel Inc., The IDI Group Companies, Ray Photo Graphics, and the William D. Euille Foundation.

The Project Discovery-Alexandria Program motivates and prepares students for opportunities in higher education. The program provides participants with information on college admissions and financial aid, workshops on topics such as life skills and career planning, and ongoing support and encouragement. Project Discovery assists approximately 130 students at T. C. Williams High School and the Minnie Howard School each year. Ninety-two percent of last year’s Project Discovery graduating seniors continued their education at two- or four-year colleges or technical schools.

For further information on the walkathon, call Lesa Gilbert at 703.838.0915, e-mail projectdiscovery@alexandriava.gov, or visit www.alexandriava.gov
