December Proclaimed as America Recycles Month in the City of Alexandria
At yesterday’s City Council meeting, Alexandria Mayor William D. Euille proclaimed December as America Recycles Month in the City of Alexandria, and encouraged City residents to recycle and to use recycled products. During the proclamation, the Mayor recognized the efforts of parents and students from Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy, who were commended for their efforts to improve the school’s recycling program and initiate a food-waste composting program.
Throughout December, residents who have subscribed to the City’s Solid Waste and Recycling E-news will receive weekly tips on how to recycle and reduce waste in the City of Alexandria. Additionally, they will be able to pledge to recycle more and become eligible for this year’s America Recycles Day prizes, including the following:
For all ages, a $300 gift certificate to a local bicycle shop For students (grades K-12), a $300 gift certificate at a bicycle shop and a $500 grant to the local K-12 environmental program/club of choice.

America Recycles Day (ARD) is a national all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. The goal of its annual campaign is to encourage Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products. Since its inception in 1997, the ARD campaign has grown substantially. Last year, residents in every state of the nation participated in ARD and pledged to recycle.
