Message from the Sheriff

Neighbors and Friends, The men and women of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office are proud to share our latest news about our public safety and community outreach efforts.

Sheriff Dana LawhorneTo be certain you don't miss out, please sign up to receive Sheriff's Office news, like our Monthly Bulletin, through the City's eNews service.

We are busy this holiday season working with our community partners to distribute warm coats and food baskets to those in need. Our Classification Counselors recently spent a morning volunteering at the Carpenter's Shelter, sorting food donations, and several deputies are sponsoring a family through the City's Holiday Sharing program.  We are also reaching out to the families of inmates to ensure that their children will have toys and other gifts, even if a parent cannot provide gifts because of their circumstances.

We also remain dedicated to helping children and youth throughout the City and again have deputies serving at mentors at Charles Barrett Elementary School and another tutoring a first grader at Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy in the Book Buddy program. Partnerships like these are important to maintaining strong relationships and investing in our community.

Our deputies recently completed Patrol Refresher Training, enhancing their defensive tactics as well as their response to incidents involving traumatic injuries. Although the Sheriff's Office is not the primary law enforcement agency in Alexandria, I am committed to ensuring that deputies are able to effectively respond to critical incidents and take appropriate action until police officers and medics arrive at the scene.

I'm also committed to making sure that our inmates have opportunities for success when they are released. Eligible inmates continue to take classes from Northern Virginia Community College through the Open Roads program and others are improving their decision-making ability through Thinking for a Change, a re-entry initiative addressing cognitive restructuring, social skills development, and development of problem-solving skills. Finally, I'm extremely proud to announce that our Sober Living Unit is celebrating its 27th anniversary, an important milestone for those recovering from substance abuse.

We are grateful for your ongoing support! Please do not hesitate to contact me or my staff to let us know how we can better serve you and please stay in touch with us by checking this website and following us on Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you,
