The Judicial and Special Operations Bureau

The Judicial and Special Operations Bureau, under the command of Undersheriff Timothy Gleeson, is the arm of the Sheriff’s Office that is most visible to the general public. Most of the tasks performed by the Bureau are accomplished in the streets and neighborhoods of Alexandria, or under the watchful eye of citizens who frequent the Alexandria Courthouse. The Bureau encompasses the Judicial Operations and Special Operations Sections, which are responsible for myriad functions that serve the courts (Judicial Operations Section) and perform security, warrant service and other special operations functions in the communities of Alexandria (Special Operations Section). Captain Shelbert Williams works closely with the Undersheriff to oversee Judicial and Special Operations.

Judicial Operations provides courthouse and courtroom security for more than 74,000 cases at the Alexandria Courthouse annually and is the base of operations for the Sheriff’s Office’s legal process and evictions functions.

Service of legal process is a major function of the Judicial Operations Section. In 2012, Judicial Operations deputies served more than 25,000 civil documents and currently boasts an average service turn around time of 48 hours. The Special Operations Section serves criminal warrants issued by the Alexandria Courts, to include service of Protective Orders in domestic violence cases.

In 2012, Special Operations deputies cleared more than 600 warrants, removing from the community individuals charged with offenses such as Burglary, Grand Larceny, Felonious Assault and violation of domestic violence Protective Orders. The sectCourthouse staffion also verifies the residence of registered sex offenders living in the City, to ensure that the offenders maintain their addresses as reported. In cooperation with Virginia State Police, Special Operations made three unannounced sweeps throughout the City in 2012 to verify the addresses of registered sex offenders.

Special Operations deputies also transport individuals in the Sheriff’s custody to other correctional facilities and courts, and to State mental health hospitals.

The Bureau's hours of operation are 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, except holidays. To reach the Judicial Operations, located inside the Alexandria Courthouse at 520 King Street, call 703.746.4120 during regular business hours.
