Inmate Work Detail

Support Services staff supervise the Inmate Work Detail, composed of carefully screened inmates who, under direct Deputy Sheriff supervision, complete public works projects that have included the beautification of Old Town, litter collection along City roadways and highway interchanges, and school and playground clean up and repair.

In addition to projects in the community, the Work Detail also provides important cost-saving services to other City departments. In 2014, the Work Detail painted walls at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter, moved office furniture and equipment for the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office and Local Probation, distributed and collected barricades for special events like the City's Birthday Celebration, parades and races, set up tables and chairs for functions at the Lee Center and Charles Houston Recreation Center, and moved hundreds of boxes of records at the Archives Center.

The following are examples of work performed by the Inmate Work Detail:

  • Neighborhood clean ups throughout the City
  • Landscaping/mulching in Old Town
  • Furniture moving at City Hall, Courthouse, and other City offices
  • Park cleans-ups at Chinquapin, Fort Ward and other City parks
  • Storm debris removal
  • Lawn care at City fire stations and the Public Safety Center
  • Landscaping/cleanup at Cora Kelly and George Mason Elementary Schools and Francis Hammond and George Washington Middle Schools
  • Painting of Gadsby light poles in Old Town
