All City of Alexandria government offices will be closed on Thursday, November 27, and Friday, November 28, in observance of the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Residential trash and recycling will be collected on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, beginning at 6 a.m.

Third Annual Alexandria Film Festival Features Local and International Artists

The third annual Alexandria Film Festival, scheduled for Thursday, September 24 through Sunday, September 27, features a diverse program of short and feature-length films, including narratives, animation, documentaries, and entries by student filmmakers from the City of Alexandria and the Washington metropolitan region. Films will be shown at the George Washington Masonic Memorial, 101 Callahan Dr., directly across the street from the King Street Metro station.

The Festival kicks off on Thursday, September 24 with “Contrasts,” a black-and-white extravaganza at the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N. Union St., from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. “Contrasts” is a free party that includes music, refreshments, open artists’ studios, and an array of “silent” films projected simultaneously throughout the Torpedo Factory Art Center. The public is invited to attend and to dress in black and white.
The Festival continues Friday, September 25 from 7 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to midnight; and Sunday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. For a complete schedule of film showings, including film narratives, visit
