Wreath Laying and Memorial Service at Ivy Hill Cemetery

The Alexandria Fire Department will observe National Fire Prevention Week on Friday, October 10, with a Memorial Service and Wreath Laying at 11 a.m.  The solemn ceremony is held each year at Ivy Hill Cemetery, 2823 King Street, to honor those who have died in the line of duty and to mark the passing of those members of the department who died during the preceding 12 months.  During 2008 there have been no line of duty deaths; two retired members of the department died during the past year.

Ivy Hill Cemetery, will be hosting the memorial service.  A fire truck parked on each side of the cemetery’s entrance will provide the framework from which a large American flag is suspended.  Just outside of Old Town, Ivy Hill’s park-like setting offers a quiet place to reflect on the sacrifices made by firefighters throughout the history of the City of Alexandria.

The media are invited to attend, as are the public.  Many uniformed members of the Alexandria Fire Department and Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department will be present.  Please notify Fire Department Public Information Officer Captain Luis Santano at 703.838.4339 if you plan to attend.
