Obtaining and Reviewing Public Documents and Records

Public Documents

The City of Alexandria is developing a new policy on the availability of public documents. Currently, many public documents are available on the City's website. Members of the public who wish to review copies of the City's documents through other means should contact JoAnn Maldonado at 703.746.4800 or joann.maldonado@alexandriava.gov.

  • Planning and Zoning Small Area Plans
  • Transportation Master Plan
  • Environmental Action Plan 2030
  • Eco-City Charter 2008
  • Alexandria City Council Strategic Plan

Copies  of these documents are available in the Office of Communications and Public Information at City Hall for review or purchase. If residents wish to purchase a copy of these documents, the cost is generally 10 cents per page. Hard copies of these City documents will be also be made available in all Alexandria public libraries.

Public Records

  • In accordance with the Virginia Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), any information submitted to the City of Alexandria is generally available upon public request. Public records from the City of Alexandria may be requested through the City Attorney’s Office.
  • Historic public records can be obtained from the Office of Historic Alexandria’s Archives & Records Center, 801 S. Payne St. The Center identifies and preserves City government public records that have been appraised and selected for historic value, and makes them available to the public. The Center is open to the public by appointment and provides public, non-confidential City documents to any member of the public 18 years and older (16 if accompanied by guardian).   • Information on obtaining vital records (birth and death certificates) can be found on the Health Department’s Vital Records and Statistics page.
  • For information on obtaining local marriage and land records, visit the Clerk of the Circuit Court page.
  • For obtaining information on property, real estate assessments, and sales data, visit the Real Estate Assessment page.
